or ExitThe Bahamas government has put forward new laws to make marijuana legal for medical reasons and religious practices. This move puts the country in line with some other Caribbean nations that have also taken similar steps.
According to officials, only companies that are completely owned by Bahamians will be given licenses for growing, selling, transporting, and using marijuana for religious purposes. For research, testing, and manufacturing licenses, at least 30% of the company's ownership must be Bahamian.
Attorney General Ryan Pinder stated that using marijuana for religious reasons will only be allowed on the property of licensed religious organizations.
To make sure everything is done safely and properly, the government plans to create a Cannabis Authority that will oversee the industry.
People will get a chance to share their thoughts about these new laws in public discussions happening in September. The laws might get approved even before next year.
Some other Caribbean countries have also made changes to their marijuana laws. For example, in Antigua, using marijuana has been made less of a crime. Jamaica has also made small amounts of marijuana less punishable, and the U.S. Virgin Islands now allow its recreational and religious use.
