Rep. Ilhan Omar Advocates for Cannabis Legalization to Address Injustices

August 24, 2023

Imagine a world where adults can use cannabis without fear of punishment. That's the direction Representative Ilhan Omar is pushing for in Minnesota. She has been a strong advocate for allowing adults to use cannabis, commonly known as marijuana, and recently celebrated a big step forward in this movement.

Minnesota, which recently became the 23rd state to legalize adult-use cannabis, is making waves in the world of drug policy. This change means that adults who are 21 years and older can now legally buy and use cannabis. Governor Tim Walz signed a lengthy bill, around 300 pages long, making this possible.

On August 1, Representative Omar marked the occasion with a joyful event called "Legalize It" at First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. She shared her excitement on Instagram, showing how passionate she is about this issue. In an email to Forbes, she expressed her happiness about this move, saying, "Allowing adults to use cannabis is a significant step, and it has the potential to correct the injustices caused by the unfair war on drugs." She strongly believes that legalizing cannabis is a big shift away from unsuccessful policies that have caused harm for many years.

But it's not just about having fun with cannabis; it's about making things right. Omar emphasizes that legalizing cannabis can help fix long-standing inequalities, especially those that have affected communities of color. She's proud that her state is taking steps to legalize and regulate cannabis use while also clearing the records of individuals with minor cannabis-related offenses.

Representative Omar knows that the current system has been unfair, especially towards people of color. Shockingly, even when people of different races use cannabis at similar rates, Black individuals are much more likely to be arrested for cannabis-related charges compared to white individuals. This has been true for many years, from 2000 to 2019. In Minnesota, despite cannabis being decriminalized in 1976, the problem persists: Black people are over five times more likely to be arrested for cannabis-related issues than white people. This needs to change.

The big question now is whether legalizing cannabis can fix these unfair enforcement practices. Moreover, legal cannabis sales could also boost the economy of Minnesota. The state's Department of Revenue predicts that by the year 2027, legal adult-use cannabis sales could bring in about $111 million in taxes for the state and $17 million for local governments. By the end of the decade, this could even reach an impressive total of $1.5 billion.

Representative Omar, who won her third term as part of the U.S. Congress, is known for her efforts to change cannabis laws on a national level too. She supports federal changes like the MORE Act, which aims to decriminalize cannabis. She's even supported pardons for people with previous cannabis possession offenses. In fact, a large majority of adults in the U.S. agree with her views on allowing adult-use or medical cannabis.

Apart from her political work, Representative Omar also has a musical side. At the "Legalize It" event, she showcased her talent for playing the Roland System-1 analog modeling synth. This event marked a positive shift for the state of Minnesota, bringing about changes that many believe are long overdue.
